Dorothea Lange

Dorothea Lange is an American documentary photographer who is best known for her works relating to the Great depression. During those times many families were in financial debt and many men were unemployed. The Great depression influenced her to make photographs such as the "migrant mother" which documented the experiences of a mother who has migrated to Australia to feed her children who were starving.
The iconic photograph "migrant mother" has
successfully represented the experiences during the Great depressing by having the mother as the focal point who tells her story. A reporter within the time of the events interviewed the mother. The mother's name is Florence Owen Thompson she was 32 years old and had seven children to take care of. She talked about her struggles of feeding her children during the hardest times in history. The family lived on frozen vegetables and birds that the children killed. Having the mother and her background story helps the image create meaning and emotional attachments to the audiences. Her facial expression of concerns, fear, isolation and hopelessness further transcend the experience of the Great depression. The mother is clearly an immigrant who chose to move from a depressed country to another thinking she would find an opportunity. The two children tilting their heads on to their mother's shoulder shows their tough lives they do not have any money to buy food or clothes. Dorothea Lange use of pose, facial expression, model and background successfully documented the experience of the Great depression.
Bondi pavilion

I chose Bondi pavilion as the ordinary experience of the eastern suburbs. Everyone knows the Bondi pavilion building it is an iconic landmark that stands across the most popular beaches in Australia which is Bondi beach. The building itself represents the every day experience of Bondi citizens the warm sun, soft sand, bustling shops and cafes, surfing and swimming, parks and playgrounds, sunbathing and ice cream!!!!!!
